Onboarding: age, sports and roles

Understand TopSeed onboarding steps, including birth year collection, sport preferences, and persona roles for your account.

When you create a TopSeed account, you complete a brief onboarding wizard before entering tournaments or creating events. This flow collects your birth year, confirms your name and profile details, records your sport preferences, and establishes your account roles.

Step 1: Birth year attestation

The onboarding flow begins with: "Let's get to know you! What year were you born?"

  • You enter your four-digit birth year in the Birth year field (formatted as YYYY).
  • TopSeed uses your birth year to decide what your account can do and to comply with child privacy law (COPPA). From the calendar year you turn 14, your account works the same way as an adult's; before that it can browse events but not register, create events, or submit scores. TopSeed goes by the year you enter, not your birthday.
  • No draw carries an age limit, so your birth year never decides which events or draws you can enter.
  • TopSeed only stores your birth year—we never ask for your exact birth month or day, and your age is never displayed publicly on tournament rosters.
  • The birth year step is permanent: once recorded on your own account it cannot be changed. Contact support@topseed.ai if it is wrong.

Step 2: Name and profile photo

If you registered with email and password, TopSeed asks for your First name and Last name, with an optional profile photo upload.

  • Your name appears on tournament draws, match scorecards, and public brackets.
  • If you registered using Continue with Google, TopSeed automatically imports your name and profile picture from Google, so this step is completed automatically.

Step 3: Sport selection

The third step asks: "What's your game?"

  • You choose the sports you participate in: Tennis (🎾) and Pickleball (🏓).
  • You can select one sport or both.
  • Your selection is saved on your profile. It does not limit which events or draws you can enter.

Step 4: Account roles and personas

The final step asks: "How will you use TopSeed?"

Roles are self-reported. They record how you describe yourself and do not change what your account can do — no permission, feature, or email is gated on what you pick here.

You can select any combination of roles:

  • Player: Register for draws, track match schedules, and submit scores.
  • Coach: Pick this if you coach players who compete on TopSeed. There are no coach-specific tools yet.
  • Organizer: Create events, configure draws, approve seeding, and run tournament day.
  • Parent or guardian: Manage registrations and tournament participation for family members.
  • Other: Selecting Other displays a text field to tell us how you plan to use TopSeed.

Roles and sports are recorded once during onboarding; there is no settings control to change them today.

Frequently asked questions

Why does TopSeed ask for my birth year?
TopSeed uses your birth year to decide what your account can do and to comply with child privacy law. From the calendar year you turn 14 your account has full access; before that it can only browse. Your birth year never decides which draws you can enter, and it is kept private and never shown publicly.
Can I change my selected sports later?
Not yet. Sports and roles are recorded during onboarding, and there is no settings control to change them today.
Can I select more than one role on TopSeed?
Yes. You can choose any combination of Player, Coach, Organizer, Parent or guardian, and Other during onboarding.
