Tennis ratings: UTR, NTRP and WTN
Explore accepted tennis rating systems on TopSeed: UTR, NTRP, and WTN ranges, conversion to UTR-equivalents, and normalized ratings.
TopSeed supports three recognized tennis rating systems: Universal Tennis Rating (UTR), USTA National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP), and the ITF World Tennis Number (WTN). TopSeed translates each provider's native score into a UTR-equivalent value and normalizes it to our 0–10 scale.
Supported tennis rating providers
TopSeed validates all tennis rating inputs according to provider requirements:
- Universal Tennis Rating (UTR): Accepted native range is 1.0 to 16.0, with up to one decimal place (such as 7.5 or 9.2).
- USTA NTRP: Accepted native range is 1.0 to 7.0, with one decimal place in half-step or tenth increments (such as 3.5 or 4.0).
- World Tennis Number (WTN): Accepted native range is 1 to 40, as an integer only. WTN is an inverted scale where 1 represents world-class play and 40 represents beginners. Decimals are rejected.
Conversion to UTR-equivalent
TopSeed maps NTRP and WTN ratings to a UTR-equivalent score using an interpolation table of 39 verified benchmarks:
- NTRP conversion: NTRP 3.5 maps to UTR 5.0, NTRP 4.0 maps to UTR 6.6, and NTRP 4.5 maps to UTR 8.3. NTRP 7.0 reaches UTR 16.0.
- WTN conversion: Inverted scores map inversely: WTN 31 maps to UTR 4.15, WTN 20 maps to UTR 7.5, WTN 9 maps to UTR 13.2, and WTN 1 maps to UTR 16.0.
The tennis normalization curve
Once a UTR-equivalent score is calculated, TopSeed applies a continuous two-stage curve to yield the final 0.1–10.0 Normalized rating:
- Club segment (up to UTR 10.0): Standardizes recreational and club play so that NTRP 4.5 (UTR 8.3) maps to 6.0, and UTR 10.0 maps to 7.4.
- Elite segment (above UTR 10.0): A soft-knee curve ensures fair separation among advanced collegiate and professional competitors without compressing elite ratings into a tie.

- TopSeed prioritizes ratings in the order of UTR, then WTN, then USTA NTRP when calculating tournament seeding.
- Can I update my tennis rating before registering?
- Not directly. TopSeed has no profile or Preferences page for editing ratings. You enter or update your self-reported rating on the **Your Info** step of registration checkout, each time you register for a draw that requires one.
